מהי מטרת הצום?

עיקר מטרת הצומות הללו שכל ישראל מתענים בהם עקב הצרות שאירעו בהם היא כדי לעורר את הלבבות לפקח על דרכי התשובה, ויהיה זה זכרון למעשינו הרעים ומעשה אבותינו שהיו כמעשינו עתה, עד שגרם להם ולנו אותן הצרות, שעל ידי זכרון הדברים הללו נשוב להטיב כמו שנאמר והתודו את עונם ואת עון אבותם וגו', ותקובל תשובתינו ברצון לפני מי שאמר והיה העולם, ולכן חייב כל איש לשום אל לבו באותן הימים ולפשפש במעשיו ולשוב בהן, כי אין העיקר עצם התענית לבדה אלא התשובה והמעשים הטובים שנקבל על עצמינו, וכמו שנאמר באנשי נינוה וירא השם את "מעשיהם", ואמרו חז"ל "את שקם ואת תעניתם" לא נאמר, אלא "את מעשיהם" ואין התענית אלא הכנה לתשובה, אלא שאין לו לאדם לפטור את עצמו בתשובה בלבד מבלי להתענות מכיון שמבכל אופן מצוות עשה מדברי נביאים להתענות בימים אלה.
